accordion fold – two ways

accordion fold – two ways

There are many ways to make an accordion fold and here are two ways to make this easy card!
The first way to make this fold is to select a
12″ x 12″ piece of double sided coordinating designer series paper. Cut at 5/12″.
Here I used the Harvest Meadow DSP and scored it at 7 3/4″, 4 1/4″, and 1 3/4″. Fold into a valley fold at the first score line and mountain fold at the second score line and another valley fold at the 1 3/4″ score line.
Because it is double sided coordinating paper you will be able to see both sides of the beautiful DSP that you pick to do this technique!
Cut three additional pieces 2 1/2″ x 5″, and 2 1/2″ x 4″ out of Basic White Cardstock and a piece of 2 3/4″ x 4 1/4″ of coordinating colored cardstock (I used Calypso Coral to coordinate with the DSP!
I stamped a sentiment and a splatter pattern onto the 2 1/2″ x 5″ piece and added it to the inside piece of DSP tucked into the left hand corner to hide it while the card is closed!
Attach the focal piece to the colored cardstock and adhere to the left side of the card front. Be careful to only adhere tape to the left side of the piece to attach to the far left top piece of the card front and nothing behind it!
Here is another sample using those dimensions but I added a 1 3/4″ x 5 1/2″ piece of colored cardstock behind the DSP (this provides a pretty accent border and because I colored the flowers on the FREE Sale-a-bration DSP called Beautifully Penned DSP and the alcohol markers will bleed through so I added gthe layer to also hide that bleeding area!) I also cut a piece of colored cardstock to 4″ x 5 1/4″ to add to the back panel. I colored the flowers with light and dark Poppy Red and Granny Apple Green light and dark Stampin’ Blends markers.
The second sample uses a 5 1/4″ wide piece of 12″ x 12″ DSP, scored at 8″ x 5 1/8″ x 2 3/4″. Fold into an accordion. and mount the back page onto a 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ piece of coordinating colored cardstock.
The second way to make this accordion fold is to cut the DSP at 5 1/4″ x 12″ and score at 8″, 5 1/8″ and 2 1/4″. Fold in an alternating pattern and use the same dimensions as the above card for the focal center piece.

Mount the accordion to a quarter sheet of colored cardstock as the cardbase.

This sample uses the Quiet Meadow stamp set and the 5 1/4″ dimensions.
This fold is simple cut, score three times, fold and decorate! Hopefully this fun and simple WOW card inspire you to go out and create some beautiful art of your own – one stamp ata time!

1-2-4 pop up insert my own fun fold

1-2-4 pop up insert my own fun fold

Sometimes inspiration comes and you sit down and design something different and special. I will pre-warn you this is not an ever day card but sometimes it is fun to design something that takes a little time and effort and this is my own design! I am calling it a “1-2-4 pop up insert fun fold” – it was inspired by a very cool pamphlet I saw and I adapted it to card making!

Measurements:

Basic White 12 x 12 cardstock
cut to 5 1/2″ x 11 1/2″ and scored at 5 3/4″
an insert cut to 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″
Designer Series Paper coordinating images
2 of the same design at 1 3/4″ x 5 1/2″
2 of the same design at 3 3/4″ x 5 1/4″
2 of the same design at 2 1/4″ x 5 1/2″
this piece will be cut into two pieces
2 of the same design at 1 1/4″ x 5 1/4″
additional scraps as inserts for the folded pop up insert section

I first made the insert template.
I scored 1/2″ from each 5 1/2″ short side.
I then could the remaining 7 1/2″ and divided them up into 6 sections lightly drawing lines every 1 1/4″ on the short side of the template.
I then made four cuts perpendicular to those pencil lines – going across the page. Starting 1 1/2″ from the top of the template place the cutting blade at the first 1 1/4″ pencil line and cut to the last pencil line (this will leave the 1/2″ sections and the first and last 1 1/4″ sections uncut. Begin at the same pencil line as the first cut but start 1″ below the first cut line and cut a line through the second and third sections only.
measure 1″ below that cut line and slice a line across the fourth and fifth sections. Measure one more inch below the last cut line and cut through sections 2-3-4-5. Follow the dotted lines on the template and score through all dotted lines on the template. and fold as show in the picture.
The Poppy Parade (red) dotted lines fold as a valley bending the fold backwards and the Bermuda Bay (blue) dotted lines fold as mountains folding forward. Decorate the small squares and rectangles with scraps of DSP .
Score the Basic White cardstock 1 3/4″ from each outside edge and mark 3/8″ from the top of the card down each side and cut a diagonal line from the score line to the mark on the outside of the card. Cut the 2″ x 5 1/4″ paper at 3/8″ on the inside and adhere 3/8″ piece to the 1/2 inch fold on the insert. Take the 1 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ piece and adhere it to the next section in on the insert and then adhere the 1/2 scored section butt up against the fold at the 1 3/4″ score line.
Adhere paper to the outside of the card and design a belly band to keep the card closed!
To close the card fold in the two outside flaps and close the two sides at the center score line and slip the belly band over the closed card!
Here is the completed card fully expanded!

A little time consuming to create the template and make the cuts and folds – but the final project more than makes up for the time involved!
1 center fold, 2 side folds, and 4 pop-out folds in the center insert! 1-2-4 fun fold card by Natalie Gramley! Hope you enjoyed this advanced card technique and if you are up for a challenge go create your own version of my 1-2-4 card and send me a picture!

mini miura fun fold card with sand and sea suite

mini miura fun fold card with sand and sea suite

This fun fold reminds me of origami folds! some of the cuts and measuring are difficult to articulate in writing so yesterday I made a Facebook Live Video and the replay is below if any of the written directions are a little confusing I apologize – sometimes it is easier to visualize as I am demonstrating it – so make sure you check out the video replay at the end of the blog post!

Measurements:
Whisper White Cardstock
12” x 5-1/2” scored 4” in on each end
½” x 11”

Sand and Sea Designer Series Paper
Two vertical pieces 5-1/8” x 3-3/4”

Sand and Sea Suite stickers

One piece of 12″ x 12″ piece of cardstock will make two cards. Cut two 1/2″ strips off the cardstock to use for the belly bands and then rotate the paper 90 degrees and score 4″ in from each side on the 12″ side of the cardstock. Then turn it 90 degrees again and cut at the 5 1/2″ mark (which is the halfway mark for the 11″ side.) I will show you ow to cut the base card in the video below also!
Make a pencil mark 1 7/8″ from the right edge of the DSP, put both pieces together and cut the DSP from the pencil mark to the corner of the DSP. (you will be using the triangles cut from the DSP on opposite ends of the card so if the paper has a directional pattern see cutting details in video prior to cutting. Keeping the small triangles together cut 1/4″ off the straight edge of that piece so it will fit on the base card.

Using a ruler and a pencil make a light pencil mark 2 inches in on the score line one mark 2 inches in from the right and on the other score line two inches in on the score line from the left side of the edge of the cardstock. Using the scoring blade on your paper trimmer – line up the 2 inch pencil mark in the cutting groove of the trimmer and swing the paper until the corner is also lined up in the groove. Cutting from the flat side (do not cut into the pointed corner of the cardstock as it may crumble the point) Then make a score line diagionally from the same 2 inch point on the score line to the other score line on the same side of the paper.
Turn the paper 180 degrees and make the same two diagonal score lines on the other side of the card.

Adhere the DSP as shown in the above photos and bend and crease the score lines so that you create a valley on the upper left side of the card and a mountain on the bottom right side of the card. (shown in pictures above!)
Wrap the 1/2″ strip around the card as a belly band to hold the card closed and decorate with the stickers from the suite!
This card actually sounds more complicated than it is! Be adventurous, dig out some of your favorite Designer Series paper and have a go at this fun design! Hopefully I inspired you to go out and create art one stamp at a time!

pull out flap card – elegantly said

pull out flap card – elegantly said

This pull out flap card features the Elegantly Said stamp set (#155095) and the Simply Elegant Specialty Designer Series Paper (#155761), Copper Foil (#142020) sheets and the Layering Circles Die set (#151770)

Measurements:
Smoky Slate Cardstock (#131202) 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″
scored at 4 1/4″
4″ x 4″ piece for die cutting
Basic White cardstock (#159276) 5 1/4″ x 8
scored at 4″ and 2″
4″ x 4″ piece for die cutting
Simply Elegant Specialty DSP 5 1/4″ x 4″
a complimentary pattern 2 pieces 1 3/4″ x 3
3/4″
Copper Foil 4″ x 4″ piece for die cutting
I used the largest scalloped circle die and the 2nd and 3rd to the largest plain circle dies

Fold the Basic White cardstock and crease with a bone folder as shown in picture. Adhere large panel to the inside back of the card base.
Adhere the 5 1/4″ x 4″ piece of DSP to the outside of the card using glue only around the edges so you can use the die cuts separately if desired.
Cut the largest plain circle in the upper middle third of the card front.
With the 4″ x 4″ Smoky Slate cardstock and the copper foil cut the largest plain circle first and then position the scallop circle equidistant on all sides on the circle.

Adhere these “window frame” pieces around the circle cut out of the card.

Cut the 4″ x 4″ Basic white square with the smaller of the two plain circles – decorate it and mount onto the copper circle cut out when you made the “window frame” (I embossed the flower image from the Elegantly Said stamp set in Copper Embossing Powder.
Mount the two 1 3/4″ x 3 3/4″ pieces of DSP to the two smaller sections of the Basic White cardstock and then with the card front closed place Tear&Tape on the visible part of the flap DSP through the circle and mount the embossed circle onto the flap.
I embossed the sentiment in Copper EP on the base of the card and voila a very fun pull out flap card!
friends are like seashells gate fold card

friends are like seashells gate fold card

Gate Fold cards come in many varieties – this is an easy version – it opens on the bottom only like a gate – hence the name!

Measurements:

Crumb Cake cardstock (#120953) 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″
scored at 4 1/4″
Basic White Cardstock (#159276) 4″ x 2 5/8″
Scraps of Basic White cardstock for the starfish

Using a bone folder crease the card at the 4 1/4″ score line and then open the card back up and place in the Seashells 3D Embossing Folder (#154309) and run the front of the card through the Stampin’ Cut and Emboss machine (#149653).

Place the bottom of the card in the Stampin’ Trimmer at the 2 3/4″ mark and place the cutting blade right on the score line (there is a line where the cutting blade is on the top of the cutting blade – see the close up photo below) Line up the mark on the cutting blade right on the score line and cut through the front embossed side of the card.
Adhere the top half of the card to the back of the card as shown below
Using a die cut image from the Nested Labels dies (which I apologize is retired) you can substitute any other label die such as Stitched rectangle dies (#151820) or the Painted Labels dies (#151605) or the Stitched So Sweetly dies (#151690) and stamped the sentiment from the Friends Are Like Seashells stamp set (#158203)
Apply Stampin’ Seal tape to the bottom half of the die cut sentiment and adhere to the middle of the bottom flap of the card.
Cut a piece of Basic White cardstock to 4″ x 2 5/8″ and stamp a starfish image from Friends Are Like Seashells stamp set in Crumb Cake ink (#147116) and adhere to the inside bottom of the card as shown.
Using a scrap piece of Basic White I stamped and die cut three starfish – and using Crushed Curry Ink (#147087) and a thin Water Painter (#151298) I water colored the starfish and placed them on the cardfront popping two of them up with Stampin’ Dimensionals (#104430) – be careful not to impede the opening of the card by putting the starfish over the top half of the sentiment piece.
I added Bumblebee Gingham ribbon (#153658) to the top of the card and there you have an easy gate fold card!
Hope these instructions inspired you to create this easy fun fold card!
Now go and create some art of your own – one stamp at a time!
