scrapbooking tips and tricks

scrapbooking tips and tricks

Today’s blog post is all about scrapbooking!

Now I have a disclaimer for all those of you that give up because you are TOO FAR behind…ME TOO LOL – this spread came together because I did not want my Artistic Leaves Color Samples that I made for a post last week to go to waste!

Long ago I actually put my photographs in pocket pages in chronological order – that is until I switched to digital and that is an entire other story! But I have years worth of scrapbooks some complete – others not so much! But when I get some inspiration I look at the dates and seasons of the unfinished books and grab one and see if there are photos that will work with my idea…

I had all of these colorful leaves so I wanted to find a Fall spread and I was lucky enough to find one in the first book I chose – not always the case but this system works for me. I also scrapbook in 8.5 x 11 as I am an avid card maker and have all the colors in that size.

These layouts can easily be converted to 12″ x 12″ or other sizes. I start with the photos and find out if there are any special photos that I wish to highlight or any that I would like to crop.

For the First page of this spread I started with the title – place and date. There were three photos in this side of the pocket but two of them were very similar and scenic so I picked and best one and put the other aside (more on that photo later!)
Stampin’ Up! has a great selection of scrapbooking options and alphabet dies are one of them. Small, Medium and large options are in my opinion the BEST investment for any scrapbooker! Personally I never understood buying alphabet stickers – some ALWAYS go to waste – dies allow you to create just what you need, in the color and size that you desire!

I chose Cherry Cobbler cardstock to match two of my kids outfits and some of the Fall leaves.
I chose the Alphabet A La Mode – our medium option and cut “Blue Hole 9 – ’98” for the title in Basic White Cardstock to make it pop on the dark colored cardstock. I laid out the 2 phtots and filled the spaces with a few colored leaves and section for journaling. The lines and stamp are from a retired Project Life stamp set called “Moments like These” and “Draw the Line” for the Journaling lines that I kept for personal use!
We do have a current Online Exclusive stamp set that would be great for this purpose called Just a Note item # 166098 $21.00.

These pages chronicle a visit to the Blue Hole in Georgetown, Texas a lovely park during a visit from my mother while we lived there.

The next page are a series of three pictures of my three boys and their Nonna, I picker the best one and highlighted it.

The easiest way to highlight a picture is page placement – I highlighted it by placing it in the center of the page but a further highlighted it by die cutting it with the Textured Notes die set and adding a matte under the photo from the same die set – the extra color draws your eye to that photo – I also color coordinated the matte to colors I used in making the Fall Leaves to tie everything together!

One of the best tips I have especially for new families is to make sure that you take turns taking pictures – usually one partner is the photographer. In our family that would be me and because of that I am rarely in the photos. When I was younger that did not bother me at ALL but as I got older I cherish the pictures like these where my mom grabbed my camera. She knew what I was to young to realize at the time that I would love these rare photos of just me and the boys! I texted her the spread and thanked her for her wisdom!

I highlighted the bottom picture by die cutting the four of us with a small stitched circle die from the Stylish Shapes die set and left it in the original photo and popped up the center to add depth and dimensional and call attention to the four of us!

Don’t be afraid to add a little dimension to the page – I lifted some of the leaves on these pages to add shadow, depth and interest!
Do the photos invoke a memory or something you want to highlight? Don’t miss the chance to point it out in your journaling as well as highlighting the photo by adding a matte.

My middle son was forever making faces and most were adorable so I highlighted the bottom photo because I LOVED this face!

Remember that extra photo I mentioned in the beginning – it was scenic without little people in it and almost a duplicate – so I cropped it into two smaller circle dies highlighting pieces of the beautiful waterfalls and added them in as fillers! I added the circle right above the journaling in the empty space!
The last page has three different ways to highlight – the top left hand photo is simply matted, the middle photo is harder to see in the picture but I die cut the boys and I with a Stylish Shapes circle die that has some stitching effects and did not pop out the die but kept the entire picture together and allowed the die stitching to do the highlighting – this is a more subtle way to highlight! The last photo I used the negative dies from two previous mattes and created a frame around the last picture! I added the last of my colored leaves and these 6 pages were easy and done in about 1/2 hour!
I added the second small waterfall scenic circle to the top of the p[age to finish it all.

scrapbooking workshops

scrapbooking workshops

I had the opportunity recently to attend the first of three virtual scrapbooking workshop training seminars.
To say that I am delighted for Stampin’ Up! to be expanding their scrapbooking line is an understatement – I am so excited with the offerings that are coming out and super excited to see the line that will be debuting in the future!
The first session met to discuss and put together the double scrapbooking pages of the new Meant To Bee scrapbooking workshop.
The workshop is a totally self contained packet that includes all of the product to make three gorgeous double page scrapbooking spreads with a lot of product left over to create more matching pages of your own!
The kit comes with a full color instructions booklet with step by step details on how to cut and put together these pre-designed scrapbooking pages.
The first page of the first double page spread features little 2″ x 2″ square of the patterned paper – one of which is exclusive to this workshop and coordinates with a stamp bundle and two toned scrapbooking paper that color coordinates with this suite of products.
The words and bumble bees are stickers for easy adhesion and coordination!
The second page of this spread carries the squares of DSP theme to the matching page and allows for a seamless spread to highlight your scrapbooking photos!
I used some recent photos of a family vacation to set off this stunning and easy to do scrapbooking spread!
I used a coordinating marker to draw dotted lines for the bee’s trail across the pages – such a cute detail!
The second spread used Designer Series paper as the background with the exclusive bee designed DSP to make the photos pop. Easy coordination with pop out die cut stars and flowers to decorate as you like along with the stick words with mixed fonts and coordinating colors!
The last page is set on Old Olive cardstock and carries the coordinating DSP papers along for a coordinated set of pages or use them separately – these photos were from an adult only Napa wine country tour we took last year and featured just a few of the many happy pictures we took! The third page was made from scraps and left overs from the kit and I still have many more scraps of DSP, stickers, punch out shapes and cardstock to use to create a bunch more pages!

I loved the ease of this coordinated kit and cannot wait for the next one to show you!

Interested in getting a group together for a scrapbooking night? Let me know and we can make your next ladies night out a scrapbooking fun night!

Below I have included the codes and linked photos of ALL the coordinating products,
I only used the Meant to Bee Scrapbooking Workshop to create these pages! You could do a whole themed scrapbook with just these products though – would “bee” super cute!

explosion fan fold card

explosion fan fold card

This is a great Christmas gift and easy to make!
This card fans out and explodes into a cute way to display pictures for a loved one or just an extra special card with lots of room for extra sentiments delivered in a fun way!

Measurements:

Cinnamon Cider 8 1/2″ square
Real Red (2) 4 1/8″ square
Basic White (3) 4 1/8″ square
DSP for front 4″ square
Scraps Basic White, Real Red and DSP for stamping and die cutting

Cut a Cinnamon Cider piece of Cardstock to 8 1/2″ square
Score in the middle at 4 1/4″ rotate 90 degrees and score the other side down the middle at 4 1/4″
Score on the diagonal both ways making sure that the pointed edge of the paper is directly in the middle of the cutting track.

Slice the center bottom score line to just below the convergence point of all the score lines in the center of the paper.

Starting with the first score line to the right of the cut fold so the score line raises upward like a mountain, the second score line bend opposite of this folding it into a “valley” fold – alternate mountain and valley folds for 6 folds do not fold the score line within the last square.

As in the photo above lie the un-scored square on the table and bend the first mountain fold down write an UP arrow symbol on the triangle that is lying flat above the square. Do this with the next two mountain folds pull them down onto the square laying on the table and write an UP arrow as shown in the picture. This will give you direction the paper should be facing when you flatten it to decorate it!
Decorate your front cover. I used the real Red square and adhered Gingerbread and Peppermint DSP to the Red piece. I added Stampin’ Seal + to the edges of the top triangle leaving just a little room and not going completely to the edge with the tape as the Real Red cardstock is just slightly smaller then the folded card. Center the top and left hand edges to a 1/16th of the card edge and adhere.
I stamped “Wishing you a Merry Christmas” from the Frosted Gingerbread Stamp set and die cut the sentiment with the Stitched So Sweetly die set. Mounted it in the center of the front cover, Popping it up with Stampin’ Dimensionals and adding some red Holiday Rhinestones and some Real Red and Basic White cardstock die cut with the Gingerbread die set for the peppermint candies.
I then decorated each of the three Basic White Square and adhered them to the squares with the arrows. I added a scrap of Gingerbread and Peppermint DSP, stamped the star cookie in Cinnamon Cider ink and added a few Peppermint candies die cuts to the little page. (you can add a sentiment to one or more of these pages or add a picture to make a super cute scrapbook!
Another page added to the explosion fan fold card attached to the next triangle with the up arrow on it!
Embellish the last square and add the square to the back page.
I tied the card closed with the Real Red Simmer Ribbon and made it long enough to make a bow in the front so that the lucky recipient can open and close this WOW card as often as they like!!
Adhere Stampin’ Seal+ to the back and adhere another red square to the back panel.
The card fans out open and closing for the coolest effect! Her is a picture of the card fully opened!
It is way easier than it looks and you should definitely give it a try!!

so cool – april 2021 paper pumpkin alternative projects 19-16-9-2

so cool – april 2021 paper pumpkin alternative projects 19-16-9-2

April Paper Pumpkin came a little late do to some supply issues – just another COVID interruption – but boy was it worth the wait – it is potentially my favorite paper pumpkin stamp set to date! I love that it coordinates with the Sweet Ice Cream set and Designer Series paper! You are probably wondering about the blog post title – what in the world is the 19-16-9-2?
Well this paper pumpkin kit makes 12 cards – 3 each of 4 designs IF you follow the directions and make the cards exactly as is…but there are many demonstrators (including myself) that take the opportunity each month to show everyone just how versatile these kits can be. I made one of each of the 4 original kit designs and then I went to work creating my own works of art and came up with 19 – 3 x 3 cards using the stickers in the kit, 16 full size cards using mainly the kit components (including the 4 original designs) , 9 cards using paper that I made and the stamps included in the kit and 2 scrapbooking pages (a 12″x12″ and an 8 1/2″x11″!) PHEW!  That is a total of 44 cards and 2  double page layout scrapbooking pages!

Here are the four pre-designed original shape cards from the kit:

Using the 2 sticker sheets that came in the kit – I cut 12″x12″ cardstock into 3″x 6″ pieces scored at 3″ to make 8 cards from one sheet of 12″x12″ cardstock. I used my blender brushes and matching shades of ink to create a subtle colored background on the cardfront. I adhered the stickers and stamped sentiments and viola – easy cards to attach to a gift/gift bag or a lunchbox note or a million other ways to use these adorable 3″ x 3″ cards!
Next I cut most of the cards in half and mounted the shape cards onto full sized cards and added sentiments and sequins! I colored the plain card backs with ink and distressed them with water droplets.
Finally I created paper to mimic the backgrounds of the popsicles – I used my blending brushes and covered an 8 1/2″ x 11″ piece of cardstock with Mambo Melon ink, Gorgeous Grape ink, and Pacific Point ink, overlapping the colors. I took an old toothbrush and a small cup of water and dripped and splattered the water onto the inked cardstock. The water droplets lift the color and make a great distressed look!
I stamped the popsicle and watermelon image onto the paper I created and created the cards below!
And finally I created two scrapbooking pages – one 12″ x 12″ and one 81/2″ x 11″!

This was such a fun paper pumpkin – I hope this inspired you to go out and create some art of your own – one stamp at a time!

a rainbow of color – scrapbook page and card

a rainbow of color – scrapbook page and card

One of the reasons I love Stampin’ Up! still, more than 20 years later – is the colors! Vibrant and coordinating – they are the best! I loved the Rainbow Glimmer paper (#153056) when it came out in this year’s current catalog but I have to admit it was so pretty I hated to cut it up and waste one inch of it! So today is all about color and chopping up my paper!

I started with a 12″ x 2″ strip of the Rainbow Glimmer Paper and die cut the Flower outline from the Perennials Petals Die set (#154321) from the January to June 2021 Mini catalog 6 times down the length of the strip, a 12″ x 12″ piece of Pacific Point from the 12 x 12 Brights collection (#147001), a half sheet of Basic White cardstock (#159276) 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″, a scrap of basic white cardstock and one of the die cut flowers from the 2 x 12 inch strip. I gathered a rainbow of ink pads: Daffodil Delight (#147094), Mambo Melon (#147051), Granny Apple Green (#147095), Bermuda Bay (#147096), and Gorgeous Grape ink (#147099) and set to work!

I have a sponge dauber for each of our 40 main colors and use this makeup container to hold them and labeled each color. Using the corresponding colors I sponged directly onto the sentiment stamp from the Ridiculously awesome stamp set (#152512) and fussy cut around the words.

I created this fun and colorful scrapbooking page using the negative space from the Rainbow Glimmer paper so nothing goes to waste. Cut 2 half-inch strips to decorate my basic white cardstock photo mats and added the sentiment and the flower in the upper right-hand corner and you have an easy scrapbook page ready for your favorite photos. But remember I told you I couldn’t waste even an inch of this gorgeous paper – well I took the flower outlines and created a Happy Birthday card!
Using a Basic White cardstock base (#159276) measuring 5 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ and scored in hlaf at 4 1/4″, I stamped the flower background stamp from the Pretty Perennials stamp set (#154435) in the colors above, Daffodil Delight, Mambo Melon, Granny Apple Green, Bermuda Bay and Gorgeous Grape. Adhered the flower outline dies to the matching colors and added the Gorgeous Grape Sheer Ribbon (#154572) and the Happy Birthday sentiment in Gorgeous grape ink from the Peaceful Moments stamp set (#151595)!
I hope this rainbow of color inspired you to create something colorful!
